CHAPTER EIGHT

Dylan

I wasn’t thrilled that Thea couldn’t get together with me that evening, but I was already planning a weekend getaway for the two of us. The only problem with that was that I was supposed to be working.

“Are you listening to me?” Hayden asked from his seat in front of my desk.

I tore my eyes away from my phone and glanced up at him.

“Not really,” I admitted.

Logan would have been pissed that I was ignoring him, but Hayden just shrugged and grinned. “It wasn’t really important, just workplace gossip.”

“I keep telling you to stay out of that. It looks bad when the boss is caught up in drama.”

He raised a brow. “So, you don’t want to know which two executives are rumored to be having an affair?”

“No,” I lied. Of course, I was curious, but I didn’t want to encourage Hayden. I’d just have to get the scoop from my assistant later.

“Who are you texting anyway?” Hayden asked. “A special lady friend?”

“Special lady friend?” I snickered at the term he’d used. “Are you serious?”

“You know what I mean. Is it that woman from the gala?”

I smirked at him. “Are you looking for more rumors to spread?”

“Just answer the question, dickhead.”

I chuckled. “Yeah, it’s Thea. We went out last night.”

“And you’re texting her already?” Hayden asked, sounding surprised. “Shouldn’t you play it cool. You just saw each other last night.”

“This morning, actually,” I corrected him.

Hayden gave me a wicked grin. “You dog.”

“I like her,” I said simply, not wanting to get too far ahead of myself by telling him about the connection I felt to her.

I hadn’t felt this strongly about a woman since college. That relationship ended badly, but I couldn’t help feeling like things would be different with Thea. I was still getting to know her, but I had a sense that she was special and we just clicked—like two pieces of a puzzle, I mused.

I was a man who followed his gut instinct in most decision-making, and this was no different. I was eager to see where this relationship went.

“So, you’re asking her out again?” Hayden asked, gesturing to my phone.

“Didn’t you come in here to discuss business?” I narrowed my gaze at him. “First, you got sidetracked with gossip, and now my love life.”

“Business can wait.” He rubbed his hands together. “I want to hear about the woman that has you so distracted.”

I rolled my eyes. “I was just texting to see if she’s free for the weekend.”

“The whole weekend? Damn, that’s fast.”

“Says the guy who fell for Rylee in a few days’ time,” I drawled.

“That’s because we were stranded together, and what else was there to do but fall in love with how awesome I am?”

I refrained from gagging, and instead finished our conversation. “I was going to see if Thea would come to the Adirondacks. I figured we could stay at my lake house.”

“Go for it,” Hayden said, shrugging his shoulders. “What’s the worst that can happen?”

Before I could contemplate that question, not that
